In recent years, a number of fitness trackers have to enter the market, with the promise of helping people create a healthier lifestyle by monitoring how many calories from fat they consume and burn off throughout the day, and how much exercise they are doing. Now, a fresh study shows these displays are pretty accurate but some more so than others – and they might not deliver on all expectations still.
In the study, performed at Iowa State University, 30 men, and 30 women wore eight different fitness trackers all at one time, while performing some tasks designed by the researchers to take 69 minutes. Among the eight trackers, there have been seven advertised to consumers, and one designed exclusively for laboratory use.
The analysts also got readings with a metabolic analyzer – a lab device that assessed the individuals’ real energy expenditure predicated on their oxygen intake. After the duties were completed, the analysts compared the measurements of the eight trackers. In terms of calories burned, all of the trackers gave readings that were within 10 percent of the participants’ actual energy expenditure, as recorded by the metabolic analyzer.
Jung-Min Lee, now an assistant professor in the faculty of Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. But, Lee added, there continues to be some work being done on the effectiveness of specific fitness trackers. The devices might be worn on the waist, which is more accurate for measuring steps, or on the wrist, which is more comfortable for users often.

But at the same time, he said, using the devices is an excellent way to compare the day-to-day activity and maintain an active lifestyle.
